Careless Driving
The rules for careless driving have evolved in the past couple of years. Defined under Highway Traffic Act, this offense is committed when a driver shows unreasonable care while driving. Some examples of Careless driving include over speeding, not paying attention to pedestrians or cyclists, using your phone while driving, etc.
While being charged with Careless Driving results in a conviction, the penalty for Careless Driving is as follows
- A fine between $400 and up to $2,000
- Six Demerit Points on Driver’s License
- License suspension up to 2 years
- Imprisonment up to 6 months (may include both fine and Jail Term)
Careless driving results in Bodily Harm or Death
Added under Highway Traffic Act from September 01, 2018, this new offense is committed when a driver drives without giving attention to other drivers results in bodily harm or death
Penalty for Careless driving results in Bodily Harm or Death is as below
- A fine between $2,000 and upto $50,000
- Six Demerit Points on Driver’s License
- License suspension up to 5 years
- Imprisonment up to 2 years (may include both fine and Jail Term)
Dangerous Driving
A registered offense under the Criminal Code of Canada, a person commits this offense of Dangerous Driving by operating a motor vehicle which is threatening to the public and other surroundings
Penalties for Dangerous Driving is as below
- Suspension of License for 1 year minimum
- Imprisonment
- Fine
Criminal Negligence
Also an Offense under the Criminal Code of Canada, a person is criminally negligent is doing anything which shows disregard for the safety of other people
